Tjernlund Products is a fourth generation family business that specializes in solving exhaust, ventilation and heating/cooling problems for homes and businesses. The company began in 1938, and today, they use the latest technology to design and manufacture products from their 75,000 square foot facility in Minnesota. We spoke with Andrew Tjernlund to learn more about the company and how they use ShipWorks.
Tell us a little about the shipping side of Tjernlund.
“Our business has evolved and grown over the years. We used to sell only through wholesale channels and brick and mortar stores, but now we also sell directly to customers. We also carry more SKUs now than before. We sell our own branded products, as well as different brands of ventilation equipment and consumer items.”
What are the results you’ve seen since using ShipWorks?
“Our sales used to be limited by our shipping capacity, but that changed when we started using ShipWorks. We were at half-a-million in sales and now we’re at ten-times that. We’ve also seen a huge decrease in time spent on order entry. We’ve estimated that we’ve reduced order entry labor by about 7,000 minutes a week.”
Wow! Saving 7,000 minutes means you save having 3 full time employees only doing order entry. Is that right?
“Yes. We’re able to do ten-times the volume we were doing thanks to ShipWorks.”
Who do you ship with and what platform do you use for selling online?
“Our online store is with Volusion, and we ship with UPS and USPS. We also use LTL for our larger, pallet-sized orders.”
What advice would you give to other online entrepreneurs just getting started selling online?
“Don’t be scared to get started. Dive in!”
